Granolier Than Thou
When I read that phrase in the most recent issue of Yoga Journal, I knew I had to borrow it.
You see, this summer I led an outdoor yoga series entitled “Going Green For God.” And in an effort to practice what I preached, I started looking for ways to green up our home.
I’ve slowly been eliminating the chemicals. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind doing this in one big sweep, but in my mind I’ve somehow deemed it safer for the environment to disperse my remaining chemicals a little bit at a time, rather than dumping them all down the drain at once, or throwing them in some landfill. We do have “Hazardous Waste Collection Day,” but alas, it is only one day a year that has long past.
Anyway, in my class I taught only to put products on your body that consist of ingredients you would feed to your family. And so, that’s what we’re doing. Or, attempting to do. (Incidentally, I am now using a toilet bowel cleaner that smells delicious enough to whip up in a blender with ice and sip by the pool. And it sort of feels nice to know that I could. Please don’t be weirded out. Like I even have time to sip drinks by the pool.)
Our latest efforts have been in eliminating paper goods waste. Specifically, napkins. Since I am an uber fan of bandanas, and since we had a bunch left over from Bastien’s first birthday party decor, they have become our new napkins. We are not fancy people, so these fit in with our table setting well enough.

This is relevant, I promise: I totally do not get that old adage that having babies means having mounds of laundry. That is just some government conspiracy made up for population control. People, I use cloth diapers for two babies, and I STILL do not think we have very much laundry. Soooo, adding cloth napkins to the mix feels like no big deal. In fact, I find folding them rather therapeutic. Please don’t be weirded out.
Lastly, I want to tell you that I was recently inspired by Amanda Soule’s blog post about using handkercheifs around the house. But we’re not there yet. YET.
Oh, now you are so weirded out.

Going Green is on everyones mind these days.
FYI went to the show this weekend,Julie & Julia what a cute movie. When you need a girls night out you should go. I am sure you will get a smirk laugh from the blogging.

That’s great Jessica! I went toxic chemical free around my house/yard 2 years ago (after a health scare) and haven’t looked back! The natural stuff works really well, smells amazing (I put peppermint oil and/or lavender in everything), and cost almost nothing. I’ll bring you some recipes when I head over your way for Jim to take my pics. There’s a great book on eco-cleaning as well called “Green Up Your Clean Up.” It was amazing, and covered everything from home care to yard stuff.
