Homeschool

I had an unexpected day at home with Bastien today (swapped Wednesday for Thursday in my work schedule). And since it is getting very hard for me to take him to our usual haunts (pool, library, park, mall) thanks to my 3-minute-max bladder control, we tried some school-like structure around the house. Here was our schedule, in case you are also someone who is looking for a few ways to keep everything sane around the house with a toddler for a day.

Child Development – we dressed a doll in some of my old doll clothes and shoes. He liked this more than you would expect.
Art – coloring, finger painting, silly putty! Another big hit.
Nap – otherwise known as Mommy’s recess
Math – we looked at a counting book, put the numbered shapes in his shape sorting toy and best of all counted the jumbo paperclips we put into and out of an empty Tums container.
Self-Directed Gym Class – he took a break from all that counting to run some spontaneous laps around the kitchen island.
Autos 101 – his biggest fascination by far right now–free reign inside the car. Today I had to drag him out after 40 minutes, kicking and screaming. And who cares if my turn signal, radio and heated seats are all blaring the next time I start the car–we are talking 40 minutes here!
Dog Obedience Training – unfortunately torturing the dog turned out to be his favorite activity. It resulted in some pretty dramatic growling (mostly on my part).

Oh well, at least the day started out on a good note.
