Bastien’s CVR – Post-op Day 2
5:25 PM
Jessica just got a smile and a bit of a laugh out of Bastien. I didn’t get picture of that, but I did get a good clear shot of his incision (at least the left side of it). You might notice there’s a portion right at the start next to his ear that is not stitched up. That’s for draining bloody fluids all over daddy’s shirt (or whatever else happens to be nearby).

3:50 PM
The plastic surgeon just came by and said Bastien’s doing great. He thought that they might send us home as early as tomorrow. All along, they have said there are 3 pre-conditions for going home: 1. no fever, 2. eating and keeping down solid food, 3. at least one eye open. At this point, we have #1 and #2 covered, so he just needs to open an eye and we’ll be headed home. Which is both a relief and kind of scary. Just before they came in, we were playing some children’s music (a great disc called “Toddlerific”) and he was dancing a little and even humming. He’s still spending most of his time asleep though.

2:00 PM
Bastien has spent most of the afternoon in grandma’s arms while mommy went to our room to get some real sleep. He did really well with grape juice today, so we decided to order up some solid food (or semi-solid, anyway) for his lunch: yogurt, chocolate milk, and a banana (and Cheetos, but those are for mommy–shh, don’t tell). He wouldn’t even try the banana, but he did have several spoons of yogurt, so that’s a good thing.
8:50 AM
Jessica stayed with Bastien last night while I got some sleep in our room. He had a pretty good night, and when the plastic surgeons did their rounds, he got the bandage off of his head, drank 5 oz of diluted apple juice, and later fed himself a few Cheerios. I sat with him for about an hour starting around 6:30, during which time he had some serious drainage (which is normal), so that’s why he has the little stocking hat on now with some gauze stuffed in behind his ears to minimize the mess. He doesn’t seem to be in much pain, just sort of crabby/frustrated when he wakes up (which isn’t that often), so he hasn’t had any pain meds since 11 yesterday morning.
