Bastien’s CVR – Post-op Day 1

9:00 PM
Bastien spent most of the day sleeping, which I think is a good thing. When he was awake a few times, he was crabby but not inconsolable. He hasn’t needed any pain meds since we’ve come to the general floor, so that also seems like a good thing. Of course, tonight and tomorrow might be a completely different story…

3:40 PM
We’re settled into Bastien’s new room on the general floor, so we’re out of the ICU. His head looks even bigger now, if that’s possible.

12:25 PM
We both tried to get some sleep in our room at the Med Inn, which worked out pretty well at least until 7 AM sharp when Jessica decided we had to get up and go right then. When we got to the ICU, it was shift change so we had to wait anyway and finally got in to see him around 8:00. It was pretty uneventful. Bastien had a pretty good night. He had just gotten some morphine around 7 because he had been fussy, so he was sleeping. His eyes are definitely swollen shut at this point, and he looks oddly better (because everything is puffy and swollen now, not just his forehead maybe). He woke up at one point and had a projectile vomit. We got to listen in and watch the doctors discuss his case during rounds, which was interesting. The nurses had to remove his arterial line, which he didn’t really like. It seemed like he was woken up by them taking the tape off and cutting some stitches out and then he was starting to realize he wasn’t able to open his eyes. He kept trying to get to his head bandage like he thought that’s what was causing his blindness. Jessica & I held him to try to help him settle back down and he feel asleep. Around 11, they told us he was ready to move out of the ICU to the general floor, but that hasn’t quite happened yet, so we decided to get some food. We’re about to head back to the PICU and see when he’ll be moving for real.
